It’s rare to have clear skies on Shemya Island, which is most often encapsulated by fog, wind and rain.
Yet on a recent trip to Eareckson Air Station on Shemya Island, Alaska, the first couple of days were blue-skied and gorgeous for a visit to our project: Short Term Fuel Pier Repairs under contract to USACE Alaska.
The EAS fuel pier was over topped by powerful waves in early 2020, causing significant structural damage.
BEL has partnered with specialty firms Appledore Marine Engineering, LLC and Global Diving & Salvage, Inc. to design and construct a temporary repair to the fuel pier, while the Air Force evaluates and prepares for a long term construction solution.
A complex challenge given the year-round extreme weather conditions and remote location, the project is on schedule to successfully wrap up the temporary repairs by September.
