Client: AFCEC
Location: Clear Space Force Station, Alaska and Wake Island Airfield
Scope of Work:
- Remedial investigation
Brice is performing CERCLA PFAS RIs at five sites at Clear SFS, AK and four sites at WIA. The project objective is to fully delineate the nature and extent of PFAS impacts in all media from past AFFF releases, update the conceptual site model (CSM), and collect sufficient data for future human health risk assessments.
During the planning stage, Brice led scoping sessions with government and regulatory agencies to finalize investigation strategies. Brice prepared site-specific UFP-QAPPs and HASPs for each installation and performed data mining and due diligence to identify various onsite sources of potential PFAS impacts for investigation and source area delineation. We are conducting RIs in a phased approach to facilitate stepwise CSM development, data gap assessment, and targeted step-out sampling in groundwater, soil, porewater, surface water, sediment, stormwater, and ocean water.
RIs include assessment of PFAS migration through complex environments, including uncharacterized coral and reef sediments at WIA. To date and in total for both installations, the RIs have consisted of collection and analysis of more than 510 soil samples, 155 groundwater samples, 12 pore water samples, and 12 sediment/surface water pairs – a total of more than 690 samples. In addition, the RIs included installation of 6 lysimeters, direct push/down hole hammer drilling to collect VAS for PFAS analysis and 21 new monitoring wells. Brice is assembling the data collected to update the CSM with a 3D model using EVS from which cross-sections, PFAS plume maps and perform groundwater flow/migration pathway analysis and PFAS source evaluation. Field work is ongoing at both installations.
